It is always best to do a hair strand test or a skin patch test before you use a new hair product. Even natural things can make people allergic. Test before usage.

How much powder you should use all together:

  • 50-75 grammes above the ear length
  • 100-125 grammes for shoulder length
  • 150-175 grammes for bra strap length or mid-back
  • 200 to 225 grammes for the lower back (above the hips)
  • Length of hips and waist: 250 to 300 grammes

Each kind of henna powder has its own time for the dye to come out. Please do what we say:

  • Henna from Morocco 1-2 hours
  • Red Raj, Organic Rajasthani Indian, Jamila, and Yemeni Henna 3-4 hours
  • Warm to hot liquids that are recommended are:
  • Water (such as distilled) (such as distilled)
  • Green tea with apple cider vinegar

Henna is used to dye hair.

This blog has all the steps you need to mix your henna and indigo, but if you are more visual and want 50% off all the products you'll need to color your hair, we recommend you start here:

Henna: How to Mix It and Use It:

  • Mix henna with one or more of the liquids on this list.
  • Let the paste sit for the recommended amount of time for the dye to come out.
  • Add enough liquid to make a paste with the consistency of pancake batter. We don't measure because every batch of henna can soak up a different amount of liquid.
  • After the color has been released, apply the henna paste to your (wet or dry) hair in small sections, starting at the front and working your way back. When you use henna, make sure to wear gloves because it will stain your hands.
  • Wrap your hair in a towel and let the henna sit on it for 3–4 hours.
  • Depending on what works best for your hair, you can rinse, shampoo, or co-wash the paste out.
  • Over the next 2 days, your hair's colour will settle.

Variations

You can add hibiscus petal powder, beet juice, red tea, or paprika for deeper reds.

You can add coffee, black tea, or our organic amla powder for browner tones.

Make a henna gloss on your own. You can do this by adding henna powder to your conditioner and letting it sit on your hair for 30 minutes as a deep conditioning treatment with a slight reddish tint (not recommended to use a henna gloss recipe if you plan on using indigo)

If you mix our essential oils with your henna, your hair will smell great and be very shiny.

Is it too dry? To your henna and indigo powders, add our Organic Aloe Vera powder. You only need 5%, which is about 1-2 teaspoons per 100 grams of powder.

What if your scalp starts to itch a lot after you color your hair? It could be that you're allergic, but it's more likely that some of the herbs are still in your hair and scalp because you didn't wash them out well enough. Make sure to rinse off your treatment with a shower head that has a lot of pressure.

Indigo hair test for natural hair colour

How to use Indigo to make black colours (2 step process)

  • If you want black tones, you must use henna on your hair first.
  •  If you only use indigo, your hair will have a greenish color.
  • Indigo should be done no more than 72 hours after henna. Indigo doesn't always work the first time a client tries it, so they may have to try it more than once.

First, follow the directions on how to dye your hair with henna.

  • Mix indigo with warm to hot water and wait 15 to 20 minutes for the dye to come out. Add enough water to make a pancake batter-like consistency. Salt (1 tbsp per 50 grams of indigo) can be added if the indigo doesn't stick to the hair.
  • Apply the indigo paste to your hair in small sections, moving from the front to the back. Indigo will stain your hands, so make sure you wear gloves when you use it.
  • Wrap your hair and wait 3–4 hours for the dye to take effect.
  • Wash or co-wash the paste out gently so that none of the colour comes off.
  • Your hair's color will settle over the next two days.
